Sayyid Jamāl ad-Dīn Asadābādī Revisited: Reinvigorating the Emancipatory Potential of Post-Islamism

This article seeks to provide a framework for rereading the works of Sayyid Jamāl ad-Dīn Asadābādī/Afghani in accordance with main characteristics “post-Islamism”, which was coined and conceptualized by Asef Bayat. Although term “post-Islamism” not explicitly used himself, I argue that we may find some features post-Islamist discourse his works. Hence, this article, post-Islamism does refer an era or historical period, but intellectual project; it is understood conceptually rather than historically. that, while foresaw need acknowledge legitimacy crisis Islam, he nevertheless rejected adoption purely secular perspective as response. After identifying fundamental pillars Asadābādī/Afghani’s thought, shall demonstrate how approach corresponds reconciliatory position thinking, marry Islam more modern values individual choice freedom.
